ΕΛΣΤΑΤ: Greece’s resident population has decreased compared to last year

The country’s population as of 1 January this year is estimated at 10,413,982 (5,090,591 men and 5,323,391 women), down 0.5% from the corresponding population as of 1 January 2022, which was 10,461,627.

This follows from the study ΕΛΣΤΑΤ according to estimates of the country’s resident population (based on annual vital statistics data in 2022) and estimates of annual migration flows in 2022 (inbound and outbound migration).

The 0.5% decrease in resident population is the result of natural population declinewhich amounted to 64,000 people (75,921 births against 139,921 deaths of people living in Greece) and net migration, which is estimated at 16,355 people (positive balance).

The population aged 0–14 years made up 13.4% of the total, compared to 63.7% of the population aged 15–64 years and 22.9% of those aged 65 years or older. The aging index (from population aged 65 years and over to population aged 0-14 years) was 171.8.

Net immigration is estimated at 16,355, corresponding to the difference between 96,662 migrants arriving and 80,307 migrants leaving. In 2021, net migration was estimated at -22,476 (57,120 incoming and 79,596 outgoing migrants). It is noted that incoming immigration data also includes people who were in the country on 01/01/2023 seeking international or temporary protection.
