Dressed in Santa Claus costumes, SUP athletes crossed Thermaikos, putting passersby in a festive mood and bringing in the “spirit of Christmas.”
30 Santa Clauses took part in the third SANTA SUP tournament, organized by the adult paddle boarding section ThesSUP of the Friends of the Sea Club in Thessaloniki. SUP surfing is a relatively new sport that involves riding a special board with a paddle. SUP (Stand Up Paddle) translated into Russian means “standing with a paddle.”
ThesSUP participants set off from the club grounds, reached the White Tower and returned, providing a breathtaking spectacle for those who decided to stroll through the sun-drenched Nea Paralia.
“We have been organizing SANTA SUP for the third year now. We had a great time, and so did the people – passers-by were happy and took pictures of us,” Virginia Panagiotopoulou, founder of ThesSUP, told APE-MPE. “We want to cheer people up on the eve of the holidays, so that the citizens and guests of Thessaloniki have fun and forget about everyday life and routine at least for a while,” Ms. Panayotopoulou emphasized and invited everyone to sign up for the SUP section.
“Very easily, in two or three lessons, you can get on the board and take your first walk through beautiful landscapes, stretch your body. SUP is a widespread fashionable sport, a hobby that is enjoyed by both young and old. Anyone can come to us and take a trial lesson,” Ms. Panayotopoulou said.
