Three environmental groups have filed a formal complaint with the European Commission against Greece over hydrocarbon extraction.
They claim Greece is issuing exploration and production licenses in offshore areas off Crete and the Ionian Sea without first assessing the serious impacts on the environment and wildlife. They also noted that such activities are incompatible with climate neutrality goals.
The complaint was filed on Thursday last week by environmental organizations ClientEarth, WWF Hellas and Greenpeace Greece. They note that by issuing licenses for hydrocarbon exploration and production, Greece is systematically violating the Directive on the Protection of Habitats and Wildlife and the Directive on the Assessment of Environmental Plans and Projects.
According to the complaint, the Greek government, with the support of the Greek Parliament and the Council of State, insists on allowing offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production projects without properly assessing their impacts.
