Every year, thousands of children and even some adults send letters to Santa Claus asking for Christmas gifts. But what really happens to letters addressed to Santa at the North Pole?
The US Postal Service began receiving letters to Santa more than 100 years ago. In 1912, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock allowed postal workers and ordinary citizens to respond to these letters.
When the total number of envelopes became too large to handle the correspondence on its own, the postal service hired charities and companies to write responses and decide whether to send gifts that children requested.
Operation Santa went digital in seven cities in 2017 and nationwide in 2020. Aspiring Santa Clauses can go to the USPS website, select one or more letters, buy gifts, write a response and deliver them to the post office. The post office then mails the gift with a special North Pole stamp.
