Consumers should carefully consider where to buy turkey for the holiday table, as the price range is too wide.
Particularly when it comes to turkey, there are many options: prices range from 5 euros for frozen and even go up to 15 euros per kilogram. According to a report by the Alpha channel, a kilogram of turkey ranges from 12 to 13 euros, and pork is 1-1.5 euros more expensive this year. At the same time, lamb and goat meat cost from 13 to 15 euros per kilogram on the market. However, many consumers order imported turkey, which costs between 7 and 9 euros per kilogram, while frozen imported turkey costs around 5 euros per kilogram.
It should be noted that this year’s turkey shortage is due to the loss of poultry in Thessaly caused by flooding. In particular, according to Mr. Theodoro Roussos, President of the Athens-Attic Association of Retail Butchers “Oi Taxiarches”: “Due to natural disasters in Thessaly, we have a large shortage of turkeys. Consumers will be able to find fresh turkey, but it won’t necessarily be a free-range Greek bird. As every year, we import carcasses from Italy and France. As for prices, they fluctuate around 11 euros, the same as last year. Butchers have already received orders, so don’t expect to find a Greek turkey at the last minute.”
