Nobel laureates 2023

On Sunday, December 10, in the town hall of the Norwegian capital Oslo, the ceremony of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 was broadcast on the official page of the Nobel Committee on the social network X.

There are 351 candidates vying for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, the Nobel Committee said. More in the entire history of the award were nominated only in 2016 – 376 candidates. The names of nominees for the award are kept secret for 50 years after the award is awarded, but sometimes some of them become known.

In 2023, the candidates included the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, Russian oppositionists Alexey Navalny, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Pavel Chuprunov. The winner was Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who advocates for women’s rights and was imprisoned by the authorities. Iranian authorities have detained an ardent opponent of the death penalty and compulsory hijab for women 13 times. Since 2021, Mohammadi has been held in Evin prison. She was sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison.

She was honored for her “struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.” The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to her children Ali and Kiana Rahmani.

According to the will of the founder of the awards, Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 1901. Nobel left no explanation as to why the Peace Prize should be awarded by a committee in Norway, while the other four prizes were awarded by Swedish committees. The Norwegian Nobel Committee consists of five members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament for a six-year term. Although this is not a requirement, all committee members were Norwegian.
