Christmas 2023: holiday schedule in Athens and Thessaloniki – on which days are shops open?

Holiday store opening hours in Athens and Thessaloniki during Christmas and New Year will take effect in 10 days.

As the holidays approach, the mood in the market turns festive and trade associations hope that store traffic will also increase. The Athens Commercial Association has already announced holiday opening hours for shops ahead of Christmas and New Year. From December 12, stores will be open continuously from 09:00 to 21:00, and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 18:00.

According to a statement today from the Thessaloniki Commercial Association (ESΘ), from Friday 15 December and throughout the Christmas period, shops in Thessaloniki will have holiday opening hours.

Store opening hours are as follows:

• On weekdays, from December 15 to 22, stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• On Saturday 16 December they will be open from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday 17 December from 11am to 6pm.
• On Christmas Eve they will be open from 10am and close at 6pm.
• On Christmas Eve they will be open from 11am to 6pm.
• Stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Tuesday 26 December.

A week before the New Year, stores will open as follows:

• On weekdays, between December 27-29, they will be open from 10 am to 9 pm.
• On Saturday 30 December they will be open from 10am to 6pm.
• On New Year’s Eve, opening hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Stores will be closed on New Year’s Day.
• On Tuesday 2 January, ESΘ states, “in keeping with tradition and custom, the shops will be closed.”
