ELSTAT: mortality reduction in Greece by 10.1%


Data ELSTAT show that in the first 39 weeks of 2023 Death rate in Greece decreased by 10.1%or 10,829 deaths compared to the same period last year.

In the first nine months, from 2/01/2023 to 1/10/2023, 96,545 deaths were registered, 48,824 men and 47,721 women, while in the same period of 2022, 107,374 people died in the country – 53,879 men and 53,495 women.

A decrease of 1,117 deaths (1.1%) was recorded compared to average in the first 39 weeks of the 2017-2022 period (97,662 deaths). Relevant percentage change per year range from 2.2% in 2022 compared to 2021 (105,055 deaths), to 10.4% in 2021 compared to 2020 (95,126 deaths), to 0.4% in 2020 compared to 2019 (94,725 deaths), up to 6.1% in 2019 compared to 2018 (89,311 deaths) and up to – 5.4% in 2018 compared to 2017 (94,380 deaths).

According to ELSTAT, in the first 39 weeks of this year, compared to the corresponding period in 2022, there is reduction in mortality in all weeks, except for the 29th (07/17/2023-07/23/2023), the 34th (08/21/2023-08/27/2023), the 38th (09/18/2023-09/24/2023) and the 18th (05/01/2023-07/05 .2023) weeks, demonstrating an increase in this indicator by 12.5%, 9.6%, 8.1% and 1.5%, respectively. The main decreases are observed for the 31st week (07/31/2023-08/06/2023), the 32nd (08/07/2023-08/13/2023) and the 4th (01/23/2023-01/29/2023) – by 24%, 23.2 % and 22.6% respectively.

By age group a decline is observed in almost most of them. The main decreases in absolute terms were recorded for the age groups 85-89 years (2821 fewer deaths), over 90 years old (2571 fewer) and 80-84 years old (2522 fewer deaths).

A decrease in mortality is observed in all 13 regions of the country. The most significant reductions in absolute terms are represented in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Western Greece: by 3047, 2591 and 1026 deaths respectively. show data.
