November 8th is celebrated "Intersex Solidarity Day"

The date is celebrated every year on November 8, mainly in Europe, to highlight the issues and grievances against intersex people.

Persons of unknown anatomical sex are considered intersex. The term “mesophile” replaced the unproven term “hermaphrodite”, which was widely used by doctors in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The date for the celebration of the “Day of Intersex Solidarity” was chosen to coincide with the birth on November 8, 1838 of the intersex woman Herculine Barbin (1838-1868), whose memoirs were published in 1980 by the famous French philosopher and psychologist Michel Foucault (1926-1984) under the title “Herculine Barbin: Newly Discovered Memoirs of a French Hermaphrodite.”

The number of people of “undetermined gender,” according to experts, is 1.7% of the population. So 0.05% of people, or about one in 2,000 people, are born with this trait.

Sometimes some gender characteristics appear in the fetus or baby. In other cases, a “double set” of sexual characteristics may be discovered during a random medical examination of the patient. A person’s family, raising these children with the generally accepted criteria of a boy or a girl, may never know that the child is “bisexual.”

However, there are cases where the rights of these individuals are violated through their medical intervention. These are called “normalization” interventions, such as surgery, and aim to bring a person closer to their normal gender category. This happens because parents, if they find out early, make a decision on the advice of doctors, while repeatedly depriving the child of the right to choose.

In case intersex people feel they need support or want to fight for a better future for these people, there are organizations with enormous reach and experience in this area, such as IGLYO, OII Europe and the EPA.
