Italian neo-fascists detained at Athens airport

Twenty-one Italian neo-fascists were detained at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos airport and taken to police headquarters late Tuesday night.

They were denied entry into Greece by “national security reasons”. They flew to Athens to participate in events marking the anniversary of the murder of two members of a neo-Nazi organization “Golden Dawn”.

The arrest followed a warning from Italian security services to their Greek counterparts with a list of 13 names of far-right extremists, members of an active neo-fascist organization “CasaPound Italia”. According to cnngreece, Italian authorities sent the list to the Greeks two days ago, noting that the men would be in Greece to take part in events marking the 10th anniversary of the murder of two members of the neo-Nazi organization Golden Dawn in Neo Heraklion, northwest of Athens. November 1, 2013.

Greek authorities conducting controls at the arrival airport noticed nine more people next to the 13 people on the list. Apparently, they were easy to distinguish from the rest of the passengers on the flight, since they were all dressed in the same style, had only hand luggage and a return ticket for November 2.

The authorities did not allow them to leave the airport, decreeing a ban on entry “for reasons of national security.” All of them were taken to the Office of Foreigners, where they will remain until tomorrow Thursday, after which they will be taken to the airport to return to their country.

Meanwhile, in Neo Iraklio, located in the north-west of Athens, riot police were deployed from early morning. Despite police banning rallies throughout Attica on November 1, neo-Nazis intend to hold their rally, as do left-wing groups who have called for counter-demonstrations in the same area.
