The weather changes dramatically: was October the warmest in history?

October this year is reminiscent of summer, as high temperatures, combined with sunny, fine days, created a similar feeling.

Meteorologists wondered if we had ever encountered a situation like this before in the country. The answer to the question was given through iefimerida.gr by the famous meteorologist and former director of EMY Nikos Canderes, who turned to the archive, which he had kept for several years, in order to be able to analyze the data and give his verdict.

As Mr. Canderes explained, “October 1981 was equally warm: the average temperature in Athens reached +25°C. Moreover, in October 1992 in Athens there were 20 days when the air temperature rose from +26°C to +31°C degrees, and on October 12 of the same year the air temperature generally rose to +35-36°C in Chania and Heraklion ( Crete)”.

In October 1991, the hottest day of the year was recorded. According to a former director of EMY, “On October 1, 1991, the maximum reached +38°C in Athens and +39°C in Argos and Tympaki. Three days later, the mercury in Athens dropped to +17°C due to a cold front coming from Russia. At an atmospheric pressure of 850 hPa, the air temperature dropped sharply from +24°C to +4°C. At the same time, the wind force was off scale. A record 9 points on the Beaufort scale were recorded in northern Greece.

“October 2023 could be called quite rainless. This year, during the month there was only 2 precipitation: rain on October 17-18, which affected the Western Peloponnese (Patras) and on October 26 (in Epirus).

Most areas experienced little or no rain. In Athens, with an average number of rainy days (the normal being 9) and 50 millimeters of precipitation, October could be said to have been “dry,” notes Mr Canderes. “In October of this year there were 25 days with temperatures from +25°C to +30°C,” the meteorologist noted. “However, on the contrary, many European countries (France, Scotland, England) experienced severe bad weather,” says Mr. Canderes.

When asked what to expect in November, the seasoned meteorologist said, “The 11th calendar month comes with its first sharp change on Thursday. The colder weather will be followed by another stronger change over the weekend after Thursday 2/11. Next week will remind us that autumn has arrived, with all the ensuing consequences.” “There isn’t a November when we don’t have floods in some area, so everyone should be on alert,” the expert concluded.
