UN concerned about ‘war crimes’ committed in conflict between Israel and Hamas

“We are concerned about the collective punishment of Gazans in response to the horrific Hamas attacks, which also constitute war crimes.”said a UNHCR representative.

Today the UN expressed its concern that during the conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, crimes have been committed and continue to be committed. “war crimes”.

“We are concerned that war crimes are being committed. We are concerned that Gazans will be punished for the horrific Hamas attacks, which constitute war crimes.” Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said at a regular briefing for journalists in Geneva.

Israel has been continuously bombing the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip since the Islamist group carried out unprecedented attacks on Israeli territory on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and taking more than 220 hostage, according to Israeli authorities. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, shelling of the Palestinian enclave by Israeli armed forces has killed more than 7 thousand people.

“Collective punishment is a war crime. The collective punishment that Israel is inflicting on the entire population of Gaza must end immediately,” the spokeswoman said, also condemning the use of long-range explosives in densely populated areas.

“No place in Gaza is safe. The forced displacement of people under such conditions… and under complete siege raises serious concerns about forced displacement, which is a war crime.” – she added. – The blind attacks carried out by Palestinian armed organizations, including firing unguided rockets at Israel, must stop.”.

Palestinian armed organizations “must immediately and unconditionally release all civilians who have been arrested and remain in detention.” Taking hostages is also a war crime.”said Shamdasani.

Answering the question whether it is possible to talk about genocide against the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip, Shamdasani said that it is not up to UNHCR to resolve this issue. “The classification of other crimes should be dealt with by the court through an independent process,” – she said.

Over the past 50 years, the UN has repeatedly made similar statements regarding Israel, but this did not lead to any problems for this country, since its main ally, the United States, was responsible for any sanctions or attempts to put pressure on Israel.
