Artificial Intelligence: The Greek government has created a high-level advisory committee

The government will proactively address the big AI challenges that already exist.

The High-Level Advisory Committee on Artificial Intelligence was created by a decision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. As stated in the corresponding statement, The exponential pace of artificial intelligence development requires the creation of an advisory committee. The main purpose of the body will be preparing the country for events that will bring all types of applications of the specified technology towards collective stability, competitiveness, sustainable development and prosperity.

“As I mentioned in policy statements, the government will actively address the big challenges associated with artificial intelligence, and they already exist. They are not about the future, but about the present,” emphasized Mr. Mitsotakis.

The Commission will provide informed recommendations and proposals on how Greece can take advantage of the many opportunities arising from the use of information technology, as well as how it can implement a coherent protection system.

In particular, the committee will formulate policy recommendations and outline guidelines for the long-term development of a national IT strategy, focusing on areas of importance to Greece such as:

• economy and society,
• productivity increase,
• increase in innovation,
• strengthening infrastructure,
• climate crisis management,
• supporting human resources and social cohesion,
• creation of quality jobs,
• protecting national digital sovereignty and improving government performance.

In addition toThe Commission will seek to identify areas in which Greece has a competitive advantage, can be at the forefront of international dialogue on the use of information technology and suggest ways to creatively combine the application of ethical and regulatory rules with the promotion of innovation, contribute to national positions in the European debate on the IT regulatory framework. Finally, it will document dynamic trends and explore the future prospects of the technology in question.

The activities of the committee are not paid. The commission’s work is also supported free of charge by service provider Accenture, which has a high level of digital services and IT expertise. The members of the committee are:

• Konstantinos Daskalakis, a professor of computer science at MIT, who chairs the committee.
• Drakopoulos Kimonas, Associate Professor of Data Science and Operations, University of Southern California
• Karkaletsis Evangelos, Research Director, Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications EKEFE “Demokritos”
• Kinti Vasiliki (Vasso), Professor of Philosophy of Science and Analytical Philosophy, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, EKPA
• George Pagoulatos, Permanent Representative of Greece to the OECD
• Panagopoulou Fereniki, Associate Professor at the Department of Constitutional Law, Data Protection Law and Bioethics at Panteion University and Director of the European Laboratory of Bioethics, Technoethics and Law at Panteion University
• Pietas Ioannis, Professor in the Department of Computer Science at AUTH and President of the International Academy for Doctoral Studies in Artificial Intelligence.
• Sellis Timoleon (Thimos), Director of the Archimedes Research Department of the Athena Research Center
• Andreas Stavropoulos, Vice President of Endeavor Greece – Partner at Threshold (formerly DFJ) Ventures – Member of the Board of TAIPED
