Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that only during a period of war he is ready to run again for the post of head of state: “I cannot run away when there is a war.”
In an interview with the Romanian news site digi24 on October 11, he explained that only as long as Russian aggression against his country lasts, with no end in sight, will he remain in office:
“While the war is going on – yes. When the war is over – no.”
Zelensky’s presidential term, in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine, ends on March 31, 2024. However, due to the current martial law imposed after the Russian armed invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, elections are not envisaged. Parliamentary elections in Ukraine scheduled for October have also been postponed indefinitely.
However, there are more and more calls to change the legislation and hold elections in wartime. Zelensky has so far rejected these demands, citing a lack of funding for Ukraine’s dependence on foreign creditors.
45-year-old Vladimir Zelensky was elected president of Ukraine in 2019. Then he stated that he intended to remain as president for only one term, but later did not exclude the possibility of his re-election, writes D.W.
