War in the Middle East: Greek intelligence services on red alert

Greek authorities, intelligence agencies and anti-terrorism departments are on high alert and are reportedly ready to respond to any challenge that arises in the country in connection with the war in the Middle East.

Among the top priorities is monitoring hundreds of refugees and immigrants from Palestine and Egypt who are being housed in buildings on the Aegean islands, mainly on Kos. The number of immigrants is estimated to be around 3,000, the news site reports newsit.gr.

At the same time, hundreds of Palestinians living in Athens are placed under strict surveillance, whereas until last week they were under simple surveillance.

The second direction of the authorities’ plan is to strengthen controls at Greek airports. According to the information, on every flight arriving into Greek territory from cities in the Middle East, passengers undergo thorough screening using specially trained dogs. The goal is to ensure that all arrivals and their luggage are fully screened. So far nothing suspicious has been found…

The third area of the plan is related to protecting the interests of Israel and Jews. Security has been dramatically increased at the Israeli Embassy on Kifisias Avenue in Athens. If there was usually one patrol car there, now there are three, the number of guards has doubled, and police on motorcycles “comb” the entire territory around the clock.

At the same time, enhanced measures are being applied to business premises in Athens and especially Thessaloniki, where there is a large Jewish community. Even hotels where Israeli citizens live are included in the protection plan of the Greek police and intelligence services.
