In the context of government initiatives to protect consumers from strong inflationary pressures, Development Minister Kostas Skrekas signed three ministerial resolutions.
According to the corresponding press release, the Minister of Development began signing the following ministerial decisions:
1. Permanent price reduction initiative with special labeling.
The relevant resolution describes the process of sending to the Ministry of Development documents-obligations from companies producing or engaged in wholesale trade of consumer goods, as well as applying special markings to productsparticipating in the program.
Businesses that will participate in the Permanent Price Reduction program must submit a written commitment to the Ministry of Development by November 30. The shelf price on 09/19/23 will be taken as the base price for calculating the discount. It is provided that supermarkets will have to place a special sign with specific markings and characteristics on shelves with reduced prices, as described in the new ministry decree. Interdepartmental market watch group (DIMEA) is the competent authority to impose sanctions if a company falsely claims to have embarked on price reductions.
2. The obligation of supermarkets to notify the Ministry of Development of increases in prices for products necessary for a decent life or products that are in high demand.
The ministry’s decision determines the categories of products for which supermarkets whose total annual turnover exceeds 90 million euros must announce price increases. Announcements of any increase in prices for food and essential goods or those in high demand will be sent to the Ministry of Development every Tuesday before 15:00. In case of violations, the Interministerial Market Supervision Department (DIME.A.) imposes a fine of 50,000 euros.

3. The obligation to announce retail prices for the sale of fruits and vegetables.
The resolution of the Ministry of Industry and Trade defines categories of fruit and vegetable products, the retail sales prices of which are subject to official declaration to the Ministry of Development. Announcements on indicative retail prices for fruits and vegetables will be sent out every Tuesday at 09:00 through the digital platform e-katanalotis.gr. The Ministry of Development may announce the range of prices prevailing in stores either through the digital platform e-katanalotis or on the website of the General Secretariat of Trade.

“The government is proposing three new measures to combat inflation,” said Development Minister Kostas Skrekas. From the end of October, consumers will be able to find on supermarket shelves special labels on products for which suppliers have reduced the price by at least 5% and for at least 6 months, supporting the consumer society in these difficult times. There will be strict due diligence at all stages of the supply chain, with full information regularly coming from supermarkets about potential price increases on key consumer goods.”
