A baby who put a toxic plant leaf in his mouth was taken to Trikala Hospital.
According to trikalanews.gr, the baby grabbed a leaf of the common houseplant “zamia” (“Ζάμια”) and put it in his mouth. The baby was immediately taken to the hospital, where he remained for two days, as this plant is toxic. As a treatment, the child was given activated charcoal and vomited to remove toxins.
Fortunately, the baby is now healthy and has been discharged from the hospital. A child’s mother has shared her family’s terrifying adventure to raise awareness of zamia, a plant that should be kept away from children and pets.
Zamioculcas or zamia is an extremely popular indoor and office plant.. Low maintenance requirements make it an excellent choice. At the same time, the plant is aesthetically impressive because its foliage is particularly “green and shiny.”
Zamioculcas zamiifolia has small but wide dark green glossy leaves with thin stems. It also has air purifying properties by absorbing volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. This plant filters toxins and provides clean indoor air, but is also slightly toxic if ingested. Keep it away from children and pets.
