"runner" will be washed to a shine

This morning, a cleanup operation began on the famous plate glass sculpture of the Runner/Aspiring Man, which has graced the square opposite the Hilton Hotel in the center of Athens since 1995.

The cleaning of the glass sculpture was scheduled for September 7, but bad weather that affected the Attica basin during those days forced municipal authorities to postpone the event. However, this morning, specialized teams surrounded the famous glass sculpture and, thanks to the weather, the operation to make the “Runner” (“Δρομέας”) shine began.

Initially created in 1988, “Running” was placed in Omonia Square, where it was located before work began on the metro station. As it turned out, the location was chosen poorly – vibrations caused by passing subway trains disrupted the static nature of the sculpture. The statue was dismantled and “put together” again in the place where it remains to this day, on the Square Μεγάλης του Γένους Σχολής, in front of the Hilton Hotel.
