“We need a new kind of patriotism,” says civil protection minister

Greece’s Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, said that to confront the threats of the climate crisis, “we need a new kind of patriotism.”

In an interview with Mega TV on Tuesday, Kikilias said that “a new kind of patriotism is needed, which will concern both citizens, politicians and the structure of the state. A common effort aimed at supporting, helping and saving our country in the face of the threat of the climate crisis.”

The minister noted that the climate crisis, affecting the entire planet and primarily regions such as the Mediterranean, requires cooperation and coordination of all services involved: the Ministry of Climate Crisis Management and Civil Defense, co-executing ministries (Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport , local administrations).

“We will introduce a law into parliament that, firstly, will check the powers and responsibilities, and impose close interaction. And I’m talking about specific things that need to be done and how we should exploit our forests. What was in the past is over,” the minister emphasized.

PS I have no idea what he meant by “new patriotism”, most likely neither one nor the other, but I clearly know that when ministers start talking about patriotism, they will most likely talk about the fact that the population will have to tighten your belts. A striking example is D. Medvedev’s catchphrase: “There is no money, but you hold on.”
