Details of the death of a worker in a meat grinder

An unimaginable tragedy occurred in Mesolonghi when a 50-year-old woman began cleaning a meat grinder and for some unknown reason her hair was pulled inside, causing the woman to die a horrific death right in front of her daughter.

The death of the 50-year-old woman occurred on Friday evening, 29/09, in a butcher shop where she had gone to clean up to earn a living, having moved to Greece from Albania two years ago with her two children after separating from her husband.

According to the first information, her hair was pulled into a meat grinder (cutter) when she tried to clean the mechanism. This led to her tragic death.

The vat where the minced meat for sausages is mixed is called a cutter. This is special equipment that grinds and mixes raw meat with additives and spices, giving it a uniform consistency and temperature. Cutters come in different types and sizes, depending on the productivity and quality of the minced meat. The cutter consists of a container with knives that rotate at high speed, and covers with a loading hatch. Some cutters also have a cooling or heating system for the vat.

The daughter, who was helping her mother, was at the entrance to the store and, hearing screams, ran to see what had happened. Faced with a terrible sight and unable to help, she ran outside and began to call for help.

Passers-by immediately notified the authorities, and police, emergency services and the fire brigade arrived on the scene. Only two hours later (!) the operation to rescue the victim from the production mechanism was completed with great difficulty.

Detained as part of the investigation into the tragic incident butcher shop owner who, according to police, is accused of an industrial accident resulting in death by negligence.

“My son called me and told me that the worker was pulled into the cutter. This is a vat where meat is crushed and mixed, and minced meat for sausages is produced. It has a safety switch as well as a general one. First you need to turn off the general fuse and then the fuse. And only then start cleaning the mechanism,” said the butcher’s father.

“All the machinery in our shop has safety switches, and we always turn them on when we finish work (closing the shop). We usually use this mechanism only twice a week. The safety was down, but it looked like the girl had lifted it to turn it the other way to keep her hand from getting inside. And apparently she accidentally pressed the button and what happened happened,” said the father of a butcher shop owner in Mesolonghi.
