Do you want to get asylum in Italy? Pay 5000 euros

Those wishing to obtain refugee status in Italy will now have a hard time. In order not to end up “over the fence” in a temporary detention center, they will have to pay a bail amount of almost 5 thousand euros.

Government measure writes Euronews clearly aims to effectively curb the flow of migrants. After all, this year alone, approximately 133 thousand asylum seekers arrived in the country – twice as many as last year and three times more than in 2021.

The innovation was announced in the official bulletin of the Italian Ministry of the Interior published on Friday. Human rights activists, naturally, have already criticized the authorities’ initiative, calling it “extortion from those fleeing wars and famine.”

The resolution notes that the request for a financial guarantee concerns citizens from the list of “safe” countries. Previously, asylum seekers could stay in Italy without any restrictions or posting bail.

This year was a record year for the number of migrant arrivals. In just a few days, six thousand migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Most of them were transported to other Italian regions. There are currently just over 100 people in the migrant detention center on the island.
