The chief of police was arrested for extorting a bribe of 30 thousand euros from a businessman.

Employees of the internal investigation service of the Greek police detained the head of a police station on one of the Cyclades islands for bribery.

According to media reports, the police chief demanded money from the owner of a store where weddings are held in order not to conduct inspections and not record violations.

In particular, he allegedly asked the businesswoman for an amount of 30,000 euros per year, and the private individual acted as an intermediary in contact between the commandant and the owner of the center. A businesswoman contacted a private engineer to find out if her neighbor had planning violations so that she could also report them.

The engineer advised her to contact the department head to “give something” to avoid inspections. He then told her that she should give 20,000 euros for the head of the department and 10,000 euros for him.

Then the businesswoman contacted the internal investigation service, which immediately took action. A group of department employees went to the island, the money was marked, and when the head of the police station received it, he was detained, as was his accomplice, an engineer.

On September 22, the arrested were brought to the prosecutor, and a case was initiated against them. At the same time, an investigation will be carried out and disciplinary proceedings initiated. The engineer admitted the charges during his apology, but the policeman denies them.

The station commander has served at this police station since at least the summer of 2022, having previously served on the island of Mykonos and before that on Koufonisi.
