A herd of sheep ate 100 kg of cannabis in Greece

A flock of sheep grazing on a semi-flooded plain in Thessaly (Greece) snuck into a greenhouse where medicinal cannabis was being grown and ate about 100 kg, TheNewspaper.gr website reports.

The shepherds noticed that the sheep were exhibiting “strange behavior.” Because they were behaving unusually, soon after grazing the shepherd realized that the sheep had eaten most of the hemp crop. The owner of a greenhouse saw that his produce, already badly damaged by the flood, was now eaten by sheep, who were trying to find fresh grass due to the flooding.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. First we had a crazy heat and we lost a lot of produce. Then we had a flood, we lost almost everything. And now this… The herd went into the greenhouse and ate what was left . I don’t know what to say, to be honest,” he told TheNewspaper.gr website.

In recent years, investment in pharmaceutical cannabis in Greece has reached a high level. Although many Greek farmers initially took a “wait-and-see” approach to growing hemp, it soon became clear that its cultivation would solve many of the problems they were facing.

In January 2023, the first medical cannabis processing plant in Greece was opened in the town of Examilia, located near Corinth. The investment by Tikun Europe, a subsidiary of the Israeli company Tikun Olam, was welcomed by then Greek Development and Investment Minister Adonis Georgiadis, who said it was “a product that we will be able to export throughout Europe, as the plant can carry out huge exports to all major European countries.”

Sheep, like many other animals, suffered as a result of the floods that swept through Thessaly and parts of Central Greece – more than 100 thousand animals died. The mayor of Tyrnavos, Yiannis Kokouras, noted that “if immediate assistance is not provided with animal feed, the livestock that survived the disaster will die of hunger.”

The flood dealt a huge blow to livestock and agricultural production not only in the region, but throughout the country. “Large livestock were lost, and this, unfortunately, is the period of the production process. Rural and country roads were destroyed. Thousands of hectares of agricultural land are under tons of water.” , – added Kokouras.

Agriculture in Thessaly, a region considered the breadbasket of Greece, has been devastated by recent floods that have killed 17 people. It is estimated that almost 70% of the cotton crop in Thessaly (Greece) was damaged.
