General strike in Greece on September 21


On Thursday, September 21, 2023 trade unions and public organizations will begin nationwide 24-hour strikey in protest against the labor bill being discussed and being prepared for voting in parliament.

Trade unions are going on strike one by one, expressing their opposition to the new labor bill being pushed by the government.

Participating in the strike are: Athens Labor Center, ADEDY Public Sector Union, Hospital Workers Union POEDINthe Communist Party trade union PAME, labor centers throughout the country, dozens of sectoral and industrial unions.

Unions of public transport workers and seafarers have not yet announced whether they will join the protests, but this is highly likely.

In a statement, air traffic controllers said they would also join the 24-hour strike. This means that air traffic in Greek skies will be suspended.

Interestingly, the private sector union is not participating in the strike GSEE, who rejected the proposal to declare a 24-hour general strike. Together with other public organizations, he raised his objections to the labor bill, which mainly relate to probationary periods, working for successive employers and “zero contracts”.

Meetings and protest rallies are planned for September 21 in a number of cities in the country, such as Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Chalkida, Chania, etc.
