“During the pre-election period, I set the target of the average wage at 1,500 euros and the minimum wage at 950 euros,” emphasized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the context of his usual official statement, which he made on the sidelines of the 87th ΔΕΘ in Thessaloniki.
The Prime Minister specified that although the minimum wage is determined by government decisions, the average wage is a market decision. Mitsotakis emphasized that wages in Greece are rising, unemployment is falling, and businesses have a problem finding workers, so they need to pay more. According to the Prime Minister, enterprises are able to provide higher wages, and this is evidenced by their profitability.
“I often tell entrepreneurs who complain that they can’t find workers that they should pay more,” he stressed. Answering a related question, he recalled that The government’s goal remains to bring the average salary closer to the European equivalent, emphasizing that the average salary in 2019 was 62% of the European average, and has now risen to 68%.
The prime minister said the Greek economy had shown resilience during the recent crisis, saying growth would exceed 2%. “We all see clouds gathering over the global economy, but Greece is showing greater resilience,” Mitsotakis said, adding that “investment continues in many sectors, with tourism leading the way.”
The Prime Minister also mentioned significant funding coming to market in 2023-24. Finally, he said that the measures taken by the government are aimed at protecting the rights of workers.
