Wholesale market has already responded to the flood in Thessaly with a sharp increase in prices for agricultural products, and following the wholesalers, prices and in retail (like) markets Athens and Thessaloniki.
Rising wholesale prices foreshadow higher prices that are expected to further burden consumer baskets in the coming period.
Cucumbers went from 40 cents per kilo on September 4 to 45 cents a week later, and then to 50 cents on September 12, the next day. The price of pumpkins increased from 1 euro to 1.3 euros and reached 1.5 euros on September 12, and the wholesale price of tomatoes increased by 55.5% in 8 days – from 90 cents to 1.4 euros.
A large increase was also recorded in the wholesale prices of the central market of Thessaloniki: tomatoes showed an increase of 36%, cucumbers – by 23%, zucchini – by 22%, cabbage – by 20%, while market representatives condemned speculative games.
The price influencing the final price, from the manufacturer’s point of view, currently has a very small contribution – a maximum of 15% to the price increase, and 50% or more is the increase due to the multiplication of profits received by the retailer.
The government will keep the Market Pass, but will reduce the number of recipients. From September 15 the platform for Market Pass will still be open, but only for privileged categories of the populationwho will be able to receive an allowance of 22-100 euros for grocery shopping for three months, since the extension until the end of the year has been reduced.
Claims submitted by September 25 will be paid by September 29, and recipients who apply after September 25 and before the October 31 deadline will receive the money by November 5. Interested parties can submit applications either through the digital platform vouchers.gov.gr or through KEP.
