Ships remain in ports today: 24-hour strike

On Wednesday 13 September, the Panhellenic Maritime Federation ΠΝΟ is holding a 24-hour strike in memory of the deceased Blue Horizon passenger Antonis Kariotis.

ΠΝΟ (Πανελλήνια Ναυτική Ομοσπονδία) decided to go on strike after tragic events on the ship, as a result of which 36-year-old Antonis died, having decided to support his family. All ships will be moored today.

In its statement, the federation said that “the protesting healthy section of the maritime world has as its main goal and concern the protection of human life at sea and does not in the least identify with the abomination that occurred in the port of Piraeus.”

After a meeting of the seafarers’ union on September 8, POI issued a statement saying that the state is obliged and must take without delay all necessary measures aimed at protecting human life at sea.

The document emphasizes that Greek seafarers are role models in their activities and in the daily struggle they wage to protect human life at sea. The tragic event in the port of Piraeus and the choices made by those involved should not be used as a reason to accuse all seafarers of unprofessionalism.

PNO talks about improper application of laws and regulations relating to shipping and port safety, violation of limits on seafarers’ working and rest hours, as well as irrationalization of routes, which leads to a risk of security breaches, writes CNN Greece.
