The decision of the Joint Chiefs of Staff came hours after experts warned of the risk of an outbreak of infectious diseases in the affected areas due to the lack of drinking water, thousands of dead animals and food that could come into contact with flood waters. Also, the authorities fear that such infections and viruses as typhus and anthrax may “escape” from the washed-out cemeteries and animal burial grounds.
As you know, the Ministry of Health has sounded the alarm about infectious diseases in Thessaly, and therefore the Reference Center at the Laboratory of Public Health of the Medical School of Thessaly University has already established a system of epidemiological surveillance in order to immediately detect possible cases of gastroenteritis or other infectious diseases.
