KKE: a state hostile to the people does not want and cannot take basic measures to protect them

Press service of the Central Committee of the KKE has released the following statement regarding the challenges caused by severe weather across the country:

“The cities remain unfortified, and the people are defenseless in the face of a rotten and hostile state that does not want and cannot take basic measures to protect against natural disasters. This conclusion should also be drawn from the consequences of this bad weather, as a result of which at the moment 2 people have died, 4 are missing, infrastructure has been damaged, residential buildings, shops, crops, cars, etc. have been flooded.

The position of the government, regional and municipal authorities, which attribute the consequences to the intensity of climate events, is once again a convenient alibi to justify the lack of modern flood protection structures and other critical infrastructures and networks, anarchic construction, even the failure to take basic measures such as riverbed clearing rivers and drainage canals. And this despite the fact that weather forecasters warned in advance about the scale of the impending bad weather. In some regions recently affected by fires, such as Magnesia and North Euboea, the need for such structures was even more urgent, meaning that the authorities bear a huge responsibility for the lack of appropriate measures.

Let’s imagine what would happen if a similar phenomenon occurred in deforested Attica, where, according to official complaints, not a single river bed in Western and Eastern Attica has been cleared, and the construction of flood control structures is proceeding slowly.

The reaction of the government and the state apparatus to all of the above was exactly the same as to a fire: “run to safety” or “stay home.”

Burning in the summer and drowning the rest of the year is not the only way. We cannot accept as “normal” the fact that every time the people find themselves at the mercy of natural disasters, as the government and various mouthpieces want to convince us of. Scientific and technological capabilities exist for early weather forecasting as well as public protection.

The problem lies in the consistent policy of the current government and all previous, regional and municipal authorities, which consider the necessary protection against floods and fires as “additional costs”, while at the same time giving priority to projects that generate a return on capital. In directions EU, who considers such expenses “illegal.” In a bourgeois state, which is focused only on profit and therefore does not want and cannot carry out comprehensive planning in urban planning, land management, in the field of civil protection, which should really serve the modern needs of the people.

The KRG demands that the government, all regional and municipal authorities immediately take all necessary measures to protect the lives and property of the people, provide flood-affected people with housing, food, etc., restore water supply and electricity networks, and compensate for damage from the flood in full.” .
