Ferry Murder: Antonis had lacerations on his head inflicted while he was alive

Antonis Kariotis, 36, who was pushed off the boarding ramp at the port of Piraeus by a ferry crew, died when his lungs filled with sea water, a medical examiner said. He told Mega TV that he also found small lacerations on the head of the deceased, which, of course, were inflicted while still alive.

Antonis, who has autism, tried to board the ferry before the ladder was down. A crew member pushed him into the churning water generated by the engines of the departing ferry and he drowned.

The crew member simply watched as Antonis was swallowed by the whirlpool and carried away, and turned away, while the passengers of the two ferries yelled after him.

“He looked as if a ball had fallen into the water, not a person,” – told reporters shocked passenger.

Despite the tragedy, the ferry, as if nothing had happened, went to Heraklion (Crete). However, the incident was reported to the port administration by the passengers, who also filmed this act, unprecedented in its cruelty and rudeness.

Passengers told the media that they went to tell the captain what had happened, but he refused to meet them.

The prosecutor ordered the return of the Blue Horizon ferry, and the police arrested four crew members and the captain after testimony from passengers and other crew members. At least three crew members and the captain have been charged with manslaughter.

It is worth noting that there were three crew members on the ladder, the officer on the bridge monitored the readiness of the ferry for sailing, and the captain could watch what was happening on the ladder through the cameras.

The crew violated the highest ethical value of sailors – “save the man overboard“.

In addition, at least two employees of the port authorities were required to be on the pier to make sure that the sailing took place according to the rules. But it wasn’t…

Port authority sources told the media that one of the port employees was in the area, but not at the boarding ramp. According to them, the gangway must be raised before turning on the ship’s engines, and the port authority recorded this violation.

Antonis Kariotis, 36, had a ticket but was not allowed on board because he was “late”. And then a crew member pushed him off the ramp until he fell and stared blankly as he drowned.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Piraeus filed criminal prosecution behind manslaughtercommitted with possible intent, against a crew member who pushed 36-year-old man until he was finally thrown into the sea, where he died.

Note that everyone who sailed on ferries often saw them sail away with the ramp down. At the same time, the team usually explained this by haste and being late. However, no one has yet seen anyone pushed off this ramp.

The Minister of Shipping has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, but many questions remain open, to which Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis told ANT1 on Wednesday evening that he did not yet have answers.

This cruel act caused outrage not only in Greek society, but also among professional sailors, who condemned him.
