Evia: a seal that appeared on the beach surprised vacationers

Visitors to the beach of Limnion in Mesochoria on Evia witnessed an unprecedented spectacle. Bathers noticed a seal that had washed ashore.

The seal, as you can see in the photos from evima.gr, has found its home on one of the most beautiful beaches in Evia. Some vacationers who noticed the marine life were even worried at first, thinking that the animal was injured or in trouble, because they saw it motionless. However, as it turned out, the seal was just … dozing in shallow water.

The Mediterranean seal (Monachus monachus) is one of two surviving species of monk seals of the Phocidae family. Previously, it was distributed along the entire coast of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as the eastern Atlantic.

Today, less than 600 of them, it is one of the rarest and most endangered species on the planet. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies it as critically endangered.. About half of the population of this species of seals lives in Greece, about 250-300 individuals.

On the occasion of the appearance of a seal on the beach, the research center for the rescue and care of cetaceans “ARIONS” informs the townspeople about what not to do if you find a marine life on the coastline. According to experts, seals often come ashore, rest and dry. Citizens should not approach wild animals, disturb them, and even more so, pet and feed them.

If you find a seal, inform the IOM organization (2105222888 and 6942494471), which is engaged in the protection and rescue of marine life.
