A couple from Thessaloniki got married on the seabed

A couple from Thessaloniki decided to seal the marriage bond in an original and unusual way – to hold a wedding ceremony on the seabed, near the island of Alonissos.

Alexandros and Artemis decided to have their wedding at sea. This is the second underwater wedding, which takes place on the island of Alonissos and in Greece as a whole. The beginning of the fashion trend was laid last summer. The initiative came from the island’s municipal authorities, who publicized the impressive ceremony. “Underwater weddings are part of the municipality’s broader strategy to make Alonissos an international diving destination,” said Mayor Petros Vafinis.

The couple was married by the mayor of the island himself, who has a diving license. The ceremony was attended by the best man of the newlyweds, seven of their friends, three diving instructors and the president of the tourism committee of the municipality of Alonissos, Maria Agallou. Alexander and Artemis exchanged vows of loyalty to each other and removed their masks for a moment to kiss.

The “attractiveness” of Alonissos captures the increased demand for wedding ceremonies in the island’s exotic locations and picturesque chapels. According to the mayor, the occupancy in August fluctuates between 90-100%, with high tourist traffic also expected in September.

The municipality, in agreement with the dive centers of the island, advertises underwater weddings in every possible way. Couples are invited to exchange vows of eternal love under turquoise waters. The cost of an unusual wedding ceremony includes equipment, diving lessons and free transport for the newlyweds (to the place of marriage and back). “An underwater wedding is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, and at a minimal cost. Interest in diving and related ceremonies remains unchanged at all times,” said Petros Vafinis.
