The first trilateral meeting of the South Korean, American and Japanese leaders took place on Friday, August 18 at Camp David. Joe Biden praised Japan and South Korea for their “bravery” and condemned China.
The meeting participants unanimously noted the need to increase pressure on North Korea and continue sanctions against Russia.
The organizers of the meeting emphasize that the US administration for the first time succeeded in holding a joint meeting between Japan and South Korea, convincing them to put aside differences that go back to World War II and discuss “an ambitious set of initiatives.”
All three leaders note that this is a “new chapter” in their relationship. During the meeting, they discussed the economic, financial and military threats posed by Beijing. The President of the United States stated:
This summit was not about China. That was not the purpose of the meeting. Nevertheless, China was certainly mentioned. I can’t say that we don’t share the concerns about the economic pressure or heightened tensions provoked by China. Nevertheless, this summit was dedicated to our relations, deepening cooperation on a number of issues that go far beyond the issues raised at the meeting.
Beijing, meanwhile, has expressed undisguised dissatisfaction with the idea of holding such a summit. A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington said that some exclusivity groups organized to promote so-called “regional security” only increase animosity and undermine the strategic security of other countries.
During the meeting, the Troika agreed to increase pressure on North Korea and continue sanctions against Russia. Yoon Seok-yeol, President of the Republic of Korea, proposed that the next trilateral meeting be held in South Korea.
