A rare occurrence: a tornado in Pieria

Waterspouts are a natural phenomenon, leaving behind, in many cases, large-scale damage.

A rare meteorological phenomenon was recorded by a resident of Eginio Pieria on Thursday, August 10. During the ensuing bad weather, suddenly, out of nowhere, a water tornado appeared in the sky. A photo published by the weather service says that the tornado formed against the backdrop of a sharp change in air temperature.

Water tornadoes are a natural phenomenon that has been increasingly observed in our country recently. And it is defined as “a swirling whirlwind of air in contact with the ground (body of water), which “hangs” under thunderclouds, causing material damage. Several tornadoes caused the risk of death of people during its passage.”

This swirling vortex of air, when it occurs on land, is called a tornado (in English, this term is found as Tornado, and over water – Waterspout). The first person to study typhoons in Europe was Alfred Wegener.

Water tornadoes are weaker than terrestrial ones, and the speed of their movement from one point to another is much slower. Their diameter ranges from 3 to 50 meters and very rarely can reach 100-150 meters, and their “time of life” is almost always only a few minutes.
