Work nightmare: Greeks can work 16 hours a day for two different employers

“We will establish the possibility for an employee to work for several employers. He will be able to work two eight-hour shifts for two different employers, and this will be completely legal”Greek Labor Minister Adonis Georgiadis said on Friday.

According to Georgiadis, the 16-hour working day will be provided for in the draft law, which is already ready, and he claims that this bill is based on “European norms”! “We are establishing the possibility of working for several employers, ie two 8-hour shifts with two different employers, and this is absolutely legal,” the minister said in an interview with Skai TV.

To the host’s question whether it would not be two 8-hour days in one day, that is, 16 hours a day, the minister boldly answered: “If he wants, then yes, this is his decision, not mine, from now on we will allow, today – no, it’s done”.

Regarding the alleged “voluntary” 16-hour working day for different employers Adonis Georgiadis referred to the directive EUin which this bill is included, noting that this “Very good”that an employee can choose a 16-hour work day!

Of course, no one wants to work 16 hours a day and only have 8 hours for rest, entertainment and family. It is poverty that makes workers work two and three jobs, and work day in and day out! Obviously, working 16 hours a day means a double burden on the worker.

Later on Friday, Minister Georgiadis issued a corrective statement, saying there should be an 11-hour break between two 8-hour shifts. In real math, 8+8+11 = 27 hours. A miracle, a real Greek miracle! Clown minister extends the day by 4 hours!

The bill provides dismissal without compensationaccording to the site 902.gr. “We set a probationary period for the worker, – the minister added, – the contract can be terminated automatically and without compensation within 6 months.”

It is worth noting that such workers will pay double income tax and insurance premiums. No incentives like in other EU countries… At the same time, the bill allows pensioners who have not collected enough marks (ensim) to receive a pension at 67 years old to work until they are 74 years old! The labor nightmare does not end with working employees, it concerns and pensioners.

“We urge pensioners to work legally, not illegally”. The minister said that the draft law provides for the abolition of the fine and the establishment of a fee in favor of the EFCA in the amount of about 10% of the additional income. He justified this choice of the government by the fact that the market needs workers, and the pensioner must “remain active!”

In a previous interview, the minister said that those over 67 would work in state organizations and municipalities. It is because of crappy pensions that pensioners are forced to work after the state-established retirement age of up to 74 years! Instead of drastically increasing wages and pensions so that workers and non-workers can live with dignity, the government is promoting the logic of even more exploitation and strain on the workforce.

PS It is worth noting that most of the Greeks, especially married men, are forced to work at 2 jobs, since it is impossible to live on one family, which is rather low relative to the price level.

PPS And another big question: who will hire a worker over 67 years old, when even people over 50 years old can hardly find a job. However, if it concerns “their” people, there is a place.
