The deadline for filing tax returns has been extended until August 31

The second extension of the deadline for filing tax returns was adopted by the government’s financial apparatus – until August 31. The relevant provision to extend the deadlines for individuals and legal entities was submitted to Parliament, but without changing the tax payment schedule.

This means that taxpayers who submitted declarations before the new deadline will have to pay 2 parts of income tax in August, in fact, including the current July contribution. The last installment will be paid at the end of February. The provision for a one-time refund of 3% remains only for those taxpayers who file a declaration and pay tax before the end of July

According to AADE, 5.3 million reports out of 6.5 million so far are:

  • 48.81% of taxpayers do not pay any additional taxes to the Greek state. In particular, out of the total number of submitted 5,315,781 declarations, 48%, 2,594,632 declarations, are null.
  • 16.49% of tax returns received tax refunds, which average 378 euros. According to AADE, 552,421 taxpayers have already received a tax refund, in particular, they have received a total of 125 million euros. It is noted that those who do not have debts to the state or EFKA and amounts for offset immediately receive their tax refund.
  • 34.69% of taxpayers must pay additional tax on income received in the previous year. In particular, for 1,844,044 refunds the result of the calculation is a debit, and the total amount of tax is 2.38 billion euros. The average tax on these declarations is 1295 euros.

At the same time, other amendments were submitted to the economic bill:

  • Provides for the transfer to the state of all shares owned by the Hellenic Company of Holdings and Assets (Hellenic EESY.P.) in EYDAP And EYATH. This resolution was adopted in pursuance of the relevant decision of the Plenum of the State Council (190/2022) and in pursuance of the relevant pre-election obligations of the government. After the transfer, shareholder rights are exercised jointly by the ministries of finance and the environment and energy.
  • The corporate governance system for the listing of shares of Athens International Airport (El.Venizelos) on the Main Market of the Stock Exchange is regulated. This provision is aimed, inter alia, at strengthening the Greek capital market and attracting investors. The regulation also provides that after the listing of EESY.P. will exercise all the rights of a shareholder and appoint members of the board of directors of the company. In addition, it spelled out the procedure for timely preparation for the conclusion of an airport management contract after the expiration of the current contract (in 2046).
  • It introduces the possibility of suspending for up to three months the validity of employment contracts with employees of enterprises affected by fires or other natural disasters, starting from the fires of July 17. During this period, employees will receive compensation from the budget in the amount of 534 euros per month and will be fully insured. To pay benefits, companies will need to submit sworn declarations to the ERGANI system, and employees to the online platform supportemployees.services.gov.gr. In addition, during the suspension period, no layoffs are allowed and any termination of employment contracts is invalid, and at the end of the suspension, enterprises are required to maintain the same number of jobs for a period equal to the suspension period.
  • Buildings in areas affected by the July fires that are classified as hazardous or unusable are exempt from ENVAT for three years (2023, 2024 and 2025).
  • Based on the relevant judgment of the European Court of Justice, it is envisaged that the VAT exemption for postal services will henceforth apply to the universal service. In contrast, the exemption will not apply to supplies of services whose prices and terms are the result of individual negotiations or commercial agreement, or a special offer under tender procedures, or other types of commission to a universal service provider.
