Usually the cost of iPhones drops sharply after they are sold. However, there are some exceptions.
At auction in the US, the first 4 GB model (unopened box) sold for $190,372.80 (€169,715.45). Since not many devices were released in 2007, iPhone collectors consider this model to be the “Holy Grail”.
The iPhone in question attracted 28 bids at LCG auctions and sold for almost 400 times its original price. LCG Auctions described it as “high-end popular item” and “collectible”, adding that two other original factory-packaged iPhones sold at record prices last year.
The site described the model as “very rare first release model with 4 GB of memory in excellent condition.” Initially retailing for $599 (€533.81), the phone was expected to cost between $50,000 and $100,000, but ended up breaking all previous records.
The first version was released in 2007 by then Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The tech giant has taken the decision to discontinue the 4GB model just two months after its launch due to poor sales.
