Greek Prime Minister expects many forest fires this summer


Amid extreme heat, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis predicts a large number of fires in the country this summer.

How writes Air force, based in Brussels, the prime minister said the authorities are doing everything possible to help in the fight against fire spread:

“Today was the first really tough day of this summer… There will undoubtedly be more. Wildfires have happened and will continue to happen. It is also one of the consequences of the climate crisis that we are experiencing with increasing intensity. The challenge is how we can contain them as soon as possible so that the damage we suffer is as small as possible.”

Last week, the thermometer in Greece rose above 40°C, due to the heat, the Acropolis of Athens was closed during the daytime to prevent accidents. Near Athens a major wildfire broke outresidents of the surrounding area were instructed to evacuate.

In updating the emergency weather bulletin, ΕΜΥ announces that from Thursday to Sunday, at least until July 23, heat wave expected in most regions of Greece.
