According to Citizens Protection Minister Notis Mitarakis, new credit card-sized identification cards will be available to Greek citizens in September this year.
According to the information, the new document will be plastic (like a bank card) and will contain a microchip with the owner’s biometric data. The new ID card will have a photograph, gender, nationality and the name of the holder. The fingerprint will be in electronic (hidden) form.
In an interview with ERT, Mr. Mitarakis said: “Our goal is to present them publicly at the International Exhibition in Thessaloniki in early September”, while he noted that their distribution will begin the very next day.
As for the old ID cards, the official said: “They are valid for 10 years and are an official document for traveling abroad. Identity cards and passports will be replaced every 10 years.” “There are no plans to change the cost of issuing a new identity card, as well as the cost of a passport,” he added.
The cost of replacing old certificates with new ones is estimated at 80 million euros. Each new document will cost a citizen 7 euros (plus the cost of a photo). WThe change of documents will be made first in Attica and then in the rest of the country. Identity cards are valid for fifteen (15) years for persons over twelve (12) years of age.
To renew your identity card, you must submit an application to the authority where the previous tautotite was issued. An identity card that has expired becomes invalid.
The new ID cards will reportedly have a total of seven levels of security, five of which will be on the front and the remaining two (sixth and seventh) on the back of the taautotite.
The built-in electronic chip will contain information about the owner: registration in the municipality; the authority that issued the taautotite, and an electronic fingerprint (hidden).
The reverse side of the tautotite will contain data: the owner’s father’s name (patronymic), mother’s name, place of birth, date of issue, blood type and social security registry number (ΑΜΚΑ), and the seventh degree of protection is “Ζώνη Μηχανικής Ανάγνωσης/Machine Readable Zone- MRZ” (machine readable string).
