Romanian firefighters arrive in Greece

The first firefighters from Romania arrived in Greece and were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas.

This is the second time that an important program has been implemented through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. On the premises of the SNF Fire Training Center in Nea Makri, in connection with the arrival of firefighters, an event was held, which was attended by the head of the fire department, Lieutenant General Giorgos Pournaras and the Romanian Ambassador to Greece, Ms. Andrianna Chiaba. Mr. Turnas warmly welcomed the Romanian delegation:

“The climate crisis poses huge challenges, especially in Mediterranean Europe. We experienced them, unfortunately, in the worst possible way in Greece. Only together can we succeed.”

The event hosted the transfer of fire-fighting equipment and personal protective equipment funded by EUafter which there was a tour of the coordination cell of liaison officers and a presentation of the preparation program for the installation for this year by Deputy Chief Vasilios Bikas, coordinator of liaison officers for foreign missions.

On the sidelines, Mr. Tournas had the opportunity to discuss with the Ambassador of Romania ways to further deepen cooperation between Greece and Romania in the field of civil protection.

During July-August, more than 200 firefighters from six countries – Germany, Bulgaria, France, Slovakia, Romania and Malta will be in Greece. They will:

  • contribute to a more effective fire protection of our country, with an emphasis on immediate intervention in the event of a forest fire;
  • exchange valuable know-how with their Greek counterparts;
  • conduct theoretical and practical joint training.

Missions will be based in Athens, Thessaloniki and Ancient Olympia.

In addition to the first mission of Romanian firefighters, the first group of firefighters arrived in Greece from Bulgaria, who settled in Thessaloniki, and also from Germany, who settled in Ancient Olympia. The pre-installation program for European firefighters was first implemented in Greece last year, in July and August. It was attended by 204 firefighters from six countries – Bulgaria, Germany, France, Norway, Romania and Finland.

The success of the pilot program was unanimously recognized at the EU ministerial meeting in Brussels last September, which led to the decision to continue and strengthen it. A similar program is being implemented this year in Portugal and France, writes CNN Greece.
