In Greece, women’s salaries are lower than men’s.

Greece is at 53% of the overall equality index, according to data provided by the European Organization for Gender Equality.

According to a ΣΕΒ survey, working women in Greece receive lower wages and limited presence in positions of responsibility. According to the results of a relevant study, which was presented to the General Council of the Association regarding the situation of women in Greek enterprises, the average salary (full-time) for women is 1115 euros, i.е. 13% lower than the corresponding male salary (1284 euros). Half of the companies (53%) have zero or very limited (up to 15%) participation of women in the board of directors, while every tenth company (11%) does not trust a woman to lead a department or company.

At the same time, 9 out of 10 companies agree that gender equality in business is very importantbut more than 8 in 10 (83%) don’t have specific goals or don’t track metrics in relation to it.

Women make up 51.7% of the country’s population and 47.67% of all employees (2022). In terms of unemployment, their number is higher compared to unemployed men. They account for 64.2% of the unemployed.

According to the survey, Greece is at 53% of the overall equality index, compared to 68% on average for EUwhich implies only partial use of the country’s human capital, which negatively affects the productivity and international competitiveness of enterprises.

“It is extremely important to support the business and provide it with the appropriate tools so that it can realize that the issue of equality is a factor of survival, development and the basis of trusting relationships with society“, – said the head of ΣΕΒ Dimitris Papaleksopoulos. The expert added: “Our own institutional role is to show an integration path that has many benefits for businesses and workers.”

In connection with the ΣΕΒ study, an awareness-raising campaign is planned in the coming period to increase women’s employment and promote gender equality at work called “Operation Equality” (“Επιχείρηση Ισότητα”).
