Two Irish teenagers died on the island of Ios

Two Irish teenagers died over the weekend, during school holidays, on the island of Ios in the Cyclades group in the central Aegean.

They finished school this year, after which, together with other classmates, they went to Ios for the summer holidays. Both teenagers were 18 years old. The two deaths occurred in separate incidents, Greek media reported, citing police officials.

Irish students, 71 in all, started drinking heavily as early as Saturday at noon and partyed until early Sunday morning, according to a local publication. cyclades24.gr.

Max Wall’s body was found by police at around 9:20 am local time on Sunday, on rocks in a field outside Chora, the island’s main town. Traces of a fall were found on the body. Earlier that morning, when his friends returned to the hotel and did not find Max, they reported him missing. At some point, Max allegedly started walking towards a nearby hotel and reportedly tripped and fell off a cliff.

Andrew O’Donnell was found unconscious near the island’s port around 2 pm, also on Sunday. An ambulance arrived at the scene and quickly took him to a local hospital. Upon arrival, he was presumed dead. According to some reports, he suffered from chronic heart failure.

Both bodies will be taken to Piraeus for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The students were reportedly part of a large group from Ballsbridge High School who were celebrating the completion of the Abitur exams, the Irish equivalent of the A-level exams.

The Irish this year are catastrophically unlucky in Greece. This is the third death of Irish young people in the country in the past two weeks. At the end of June, a 22-year-old Irishman who came to Greece for work in the summer drowned in the pool after a huge booze in a club on the island of Zakynthos. And last week a young Irish woman was raped on the island of Rhodes.
