Newly elected deputies of Greece sworn in, distribution of seats

Members of Parliament elected in the June 25 general election were sworn in on Monday morning in a ceremony also attended by the President of the Hellenic Republic. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Legislators took a religious oath depending on whether they were Orthodox or Muslim, while some MPs opted for a civil oath declaring adherence to the constitution.

The meeting was chaired by the first vice-speaker of the previous parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis. After being sworn in, the deputies signed the relevant protocol and received a folder containing, among other things, copies of the Greek Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.

According to the final results of the vote, and a slightly modified initial seat count for elected political parties, the new 300-seat parliament consists of:

Political groups

Opposition (142)

Term of the work
4 years

The new parliament will meet on Tuesday for the election of the chairman of the parliament and the presidium based on the proposals of the parliamentary groups and parliamentary regulations. Kaklamanis will again preside over the opening of the session, announcing the candidates proposed by the parliamentary groups, and the elections will be held by roll call. The ruling “New Democracy” nominated the previous speaker of parliament Konstantinos Tasoulas.

After the announcement of the results, Kaklamanis will invite the new speaker of parliament to come to the podium, chair the meeting and make a speech. The parliament will then adjourn briefly before returning to elect the members of the presidium of the parliament. Each candidate must receive at least 70 votes to be elected.

A vote of confidence in the Mitsotakis government is scheduled for Saturday, July 8, 2023. The three-day debate on the political statement of the new government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis will begin on Thursday 6 July. They will culminate in a vote on Saturday, during which the new government will ask Parliament for a vote of confidence.

Voting ends with a roll call, which is held no later than at midnight on the third day of debate and in the presence of an absolute majority of deputies, which, however, cannot be less than two-fifths (120 deputies) of the plenum.
