The head of the CIA is not going to miss the opportunity to recruit Russians

CIA director William Burns said there is a unique and rare opportunity for recruiting Russians dissatisfied with the war, and does not intend to miss it.

He stated this, according to Reuters, during a lecture for the British non-profit Ditchley Foundation:

“Discontent with the war will continue to undermine the Russian leadership under a constant diet of state propaganda and practiced repression. This discontent creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity for us at the CIA. We will not let it go to waste.”

Regarding the “Wagnerian” rebellion, the head of the CIA noted:

“It is astonishing that Prigozhin, before his actions, sharply criticized the Kremlin’s false justification for its invasion of Ukraine and the incompetence of the war by the Russian military leadership. The impact of these words and actions will be felt for some time to come. This is a vivid reminder of the destructive impact of Putin’s war on his own society and his own regime.

The former US ambassador to Russia (from 2005 to 2008) called the mutiny of the head of Wagner “an armed challenge to the Russian state”, and assured that it was “an internal Russian affair in which the United States did not participate and will not participate.”
