Nudism has been banned on Gavdos Beach – “the locals have wanted this for years,” says the island’s mayor. Nevertheless, the ban caused a storm of responses on social networks.
A sign reading “Nudism is prohibited” on the beach of Sarakinikos (Gavdos Island) caused a public outcry. According to flashnews.gr, the nudity ban only applies to Sarakinikos Beach and not the rest, but it was not enough to reassure beachgoers, as Gavdos Mayor Lilian Stefanaki at least claims.
“First of all, let us emphasize that not local residents of Gavdos comment, but visitors. locals wished for years to have a beach where you can swim with your family, without the possibility of stumbling upon nudists. It was a public request. There should also be some respect for the locals,” the mayor said.
“Now the Sarakinikos beach has changed, it is not the same as before. Now the beach has been landscaped and, accordingly, put in order,” emphasizes Ms. Stefanaki. As the mayor of Gavdos explains, if nudists are found, it is on this beach that the police will be called to take action.
