The departure of Alexis Tsipras from the leadership of SYRIZA has led to dramatic events, as telephones have been ringing in the party office on Koumunduru Square for the past few hours.
According to local media reports, many heads of regional divisions call and report that they are leaving the party: “We will not stay in SYRIZA without Tsipras.”
Is the flurry of phone calls a message that shows the love of fellow party members and the people for A. Tsipras, or are they just rats running from a sinking ship?
However, there is other information among journalists and politicians: A. Tsipras wants to create a new political party and leave the worn-out SYRIZA far behind. After all, who was SYRIZA before A. Tsipras and a few years before the memorandums? A far-left party with 3% of seats in parliament. It was Tsipras who led the party to victory in the 2015 elections, and without him, the 22-party alliance known as SYRIZA is likely to fall apart and return to the previous three percent.
