“Second Hand” gaining momentum in Greece

Inflationary pressure and rising prices have significantly affected the purchasing behavior of Greek citizens. The turnover of the used goods market increased by 195.5%.

Especially in great demand is “second hand”, notes CNN Greece, for young shoppers, in the apparel and footwear categories. For a significant percentage of consumers, buying used goods is a more economical alternative.

However, the circular economy is a growing concern not only for the younger generation of consumers, but also for businesses. It is also worth noting the important role of social networks and the development of online markets in the growth of the “Second Hand” trend, as digital platforms are a key channel for buying or reselling second-hand goods.

The growth of the second-hand trend in Greece is evidenced by the fact that, according to data ΕΛΣΤΑΤ, in April 2023, the category of stores with second-hand goods recorded a growth of 195.5%, which is one of the largest rates among individuals in retail branches. In the first quarter of the year, the overall category growth was 42.7%.

A Focus Bari & YouGov survey in April 2022 found that one in two Greeks bought at least one type of used item in the last quarter before the survey. These purchases were found to be more common among men and young people, and the main “sources” of them were online stores, physical stores, friends or acquaintances.

There are more and more large companies at the international level, which are now “investing” in this category as well. For example, clothing brands Zara and H&M allow consumers to shop secondhand or resell their own products through platforms. But outlet and second-hand clothing chains are also growing. For example, Bulgarian Mania and Lithuanian Humana, which plan to “enter” the Greek market very soon.
