In Romania, an explosion occurred at the Petromidia refinery, owned by Kazakhstan’s KMG International, the company’s press service reports.
More than 70 firefighters are on the scene, according to an update from the fire brigade. “We have information that there were three workers at the hydrocracking unit who luckily appeared to have been evacuated when the explosion occurred. We are currently working with nine fire trucks, and there are also several ambulances. In addition, an order was issued to take additional measures to attract nine more special fire engines from Bucharest and other regions to help.– said the press secretary of the fire service Costanzi.
In a video posted to social media, thick black smoke can be seen billowing from the refinery. It is indicated that the fire was extinguished by 18.00 local time. Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed the absence of leaks of hazardous substances.

It is also reported that an investigation has been launched. The Petromidia refinery is located on the Black Sea coast and is the refinery of KMG International in Romania.
KMG International manages more than 1000 distribution points in European countries (Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Georgia) under the Rompetrol brand. KMG International is owned by the National Oil and Gas Company of the Republic of Kazakhstan KazMunayGas JSC. In July 2021, another explosion occurred at this refinery, followed by a fire, as a result of which one person died and five were injured.
