EU to decide on forced sterilization in July 2023 (video)

In July, the European Parliament plans to discuss and take an adequate decision on forced sterilization – whether it should be outlawed throughout the territory EU.

To date, there is no single legislation on this subject in the European Union, and member countries are responsible for such decisions. This practice is recognized as a criminal offense by: Poland, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden and Spain. However, this does not exclude the possibility of carrying out similar operations there, too. writes euronews.

In many EU countries, forced sterilization is allowed for people with disabilities, most of them mentally. In three European countries, this operation is also possible for minors – in Portugal, Hungary and the Czech Republic. This practice is outraged by human rights activists, it is contrary to the Istanbul Convention and the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the EU authorities are going to have their say. Member of the European Parliament Maria Eugenia Rodríguez Palop says:

“This is a very cruel form of domination, both of sexuality and reproduction. The key to its ban is in the hands of Brussels.”

In July 2023, the European Parliament will debate whether the practice should be outlawed throughout the EU. The deputies will also talk about forced contraception.
