Consumers were outraged by the price of Greek salad (χωριάτικης σαλάτας) in taverns in Crete, which reaches even ten euros. According to cretalive.gr, the Consumer Protection Union of Crete has recently received a lot of complaints from locals and tourists who are faced with the exorbitant cost of a traditional dish.
The union warns of a “trick” many restaurant owners use during the summer season to charge for bread and water without informing customers. “According to the decree of 01.07.5.2007, which has been in force since May 24, 2007, catering, leisure, entertainment and entertainment centers and shops you are not allowed to charge your customers the so-called COVERAGE (dishes, cutlery, towels, toothpicks, etc.).
“According to the market regulations, for catering establishments, all products offered (bread, bread with butter, bread with olive pate, water) must be indicated in the price lists with the corresponding prices. The customer can order them like anything else. Hence any action by the store owner to charge for everythingwhat is served to the table to the visitor (and what he did NOT order) is a violation of the law. Consumers must check their bills and refuse to pay. Example: a family of four automatically seated at the table will be charged 10 euros (for bread 2X4 = 8 plus 2nd bottled water equals 10 euros),” continues the consumer protection association of Crete.
At the same time, it urges consumers to be vigilant about the price of Greek salad, which has suddenly risen in price to 10 euros. As a result, the union urges the owners of catering, leisure and entertainment stores to comply with current legislation and not scare away visitors, because tourism needs the support of all of us.
